Fannie Lou Hamer’s Historic 1964 DNC Speech: “Is This America?”
On August 22, 1964, civil rights icon Fannie Lou Hamer delivered one of the most powerful and fearless speeches in American history. Speaking before the Credentials Committee at the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, Hamer exposed the brutal reality of systemic racism, voter suppression, and state-sanctioned violence in Mississippi.
Representing the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), she challenged the national Democratic leadership by demanding that Black delegates be seated over the state’s all-white, segregationist delegation. Her harrowing, firsthand account of being fired, threatened, and brutally beaten just for trying to register to vote shocked the nation and forced America to look in the mirror.
Watch the legendary moment that galvanized the Civil Rights Movement and helped pave the way for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
