Great Migration to Jim Crow New Jersey
Millions of Black Americans fled the violence of the Jim Crow South during the Great Migration. But the North—and specifically New Jersey—was far from a welcoming refuge. Descendants of migrants to the cities Newark and Elizabeth share what their families faced in the South and in New Jersey. Dr. John A. Kenny, personal physician to Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, was forced to leave Tuskegee, Alabama after death threats from the Ku Klux Klan. In Newark, Dr. Kenny confronted career barriers, segregation, and redlining — the discriminatory housing practice of refusing to offer credit or insurance. NJ Governor Woodrow Wilson was a supporter of segregation, including when he became U.S. president after his governorship. Historians and community leaders unpack how Northern racial suppression and humiliations evolved and why its impacts are still felt today.
