Say Brother | Episode 325: Community Fellows

This episode of Say Brother explores the history and impact of the Community Fellows Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which gave community leaders the opportunity to work with the university on projects aimed at creating positive change in their communities.

Host Topper Carew speaks with Program Director Frank Jones, Massachusetts State Representative Mel King, and several Community Fellows, including Pat Raynor, Chuck Turner, Johnny Tillman, and Frieda Garcia. They discuss their community projects, their experiences in the program, and how the fellowship helped support their work.

The episode also features footage from a program seminar, where Frieda Garcia discusses her research involving Puerto Rican and Dominican communities. Carew also reflects on his own experience as a former Community Fellow before becoming a producer of Say Brother.

Founded by Mel King, the Community Fellows Program provided participants with financial support, tuition, and research funding, allowing people from different backgrounds to work alongside MIT while addressing important social and community issues. King continued to lead the program until 1996.
