Tony Brown’s Journal | Interview With The Confessed Assassin of Malcolm X
This episode of Tony Brown’s Journal, titled The Assassin of Malcolm X, features the first-ever television interview with Talmadge Hayer (Thomas Hagan), the only man caught at the scene who confessed to the 1965 murder of Malcolm X. Broadcast from inside his prison cell, the full program captures a historic breakthrough in investigative journalism.
In the video, Hayer recounts the events at the Audubon Ballroom and details his own participation in the shooting. The defining core of the broadcast is Hayer’s explicit, unedited testimony exonerating his two co-defendants, Norman 3X Butler and Thomas 15X Johnson. He insists that local authorities convicted the wrong individuals, providing a crucial on-camera record that challenged the official state narrative for decades and laid the groundwork for their eventual 2021 exonerations.
