Black Wall Street Survivors Tell Their Stories
In 1921, Black Wall Street — the thriving Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma — was burned to the ground by a white mob. Hundreds of Black residents were killed. No one was ever charged. And for nearly 80 years, the survivors carried that story alone.
In 1997, a Tulsa educator named Eddie Faye Gates was appointed to find the remaining survivors and get their testimonies on record before they were gone forever. She tracked down 200 people. By the time she finished, 103 of them were already dead.
This video features 8 of those recorded testimonies — straight from the people who were there.
